What is ARCHITECTURE?

The definition varies from architect to architect. I have never received the same answer twice. Everything has an architecture to form it's design, but for our school we discuss buildings and structures.

Root words
ARCHI - Means CHIEF or LEADER
TECT- Means BUILDER, MASON

Project City

This project involves thinking about a city. On a blank sheet of paper or your sketchbook draw what comes to mind when you think of a city. It does not have to be any particular city. It is what you think one should be. This is your vision. The best thing is there is no right or wrong. Everyone's right. Just show me your thoughts no matter what it looks like. Draw two if you have time. Color for emphasis. Emphasis is when we attract attention to something important in a drawing. Emphasis is an art principle that we will discuss more throughout the course.

Ask your self, "My city would have __________."

READING FOR WEEK TWO AND THREE

Your reading assignment for the next two weeks.

WEEK TWO READING- Pyramid by David Macaulay

This is a great overview of construction methods.

How did ancient Egyptians build the Great Pyramid at Giza, joining two million blocks of heavy stone with amazing precision? Who were the leaders who built these enormous structures, and what did these tombs signify? Host David Macaulay explores the history, mythology, and religions of Egypt's people, combining live footage and animation.

RESEARCH PROJECT

Using any resource you have available research Babylon. Write a paragraph on what you find the most interesting thing about Babylon.

Key words to search

Sumeria
Sargon of Agade
Assyria
Hammurabi

Project: Hanging Gardens of Babylon

According to legend, the Hanging Gardens were built so Nebuchadnezzar's bride would not miss the mountains of her Median home.

If you were designing hanging gardens what would they look like?

You can draw, build out of paper, Lego's, blocks, anything you have available. The only thing I ask is you snap a picture and describe all the items you require for your amazing gardens. I will post my version next week.

Your requirement is be extremely creative.

Foundations In Architecture

We travel the world in search of wonderful sites and buildings. As an architect you are part of creating new worlds. Foundations In Architecture provides courses for all ages teaching the basics of architecture, interior design, and art history. Imagine you were the designer of the Pantheon in Rome and your building is still a copied model 2000 years later. What other profession has this impact of society.

FIA courses are organized according to grade level and activity. The younger students will have a variety of books that correlate with architectural history, design, and geography. These will reinforce existing curriculums by providing additional knowledge about the architectural world. The middle grades will focus on history, design, drawing, urban development, and construction. High school is an advanced program in architectural history, and architectural and interior design development. The all courses are online and prepare students for distance learning methods. All resources are provided and included in the cost. The lessons include reading, designing, building models, watching videos, and even designing your own cities. Foundations In Architecture shows students that professions can be fun, skill building, and enlightening. Our mission is to provide the resources for the next generation of architects and designers.
